"Simulandes," the student team from the Universidad do los Andes earned first place at the 2007 Rockwell Automation Student Simulation Competition at the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) annual conference.

The first place award included plaques and $2,500 to the winning team ($1,000 for travel expenses to finals and a $1,500 cash award). Dr. Germán Riaño, served as faculty advisor to the team. Pictured below are the winning team members Julián Gómez, Iván Rey, and Ginna Arango.

The second place team was from ITAM - Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and are Josué Zárate-Ramos, Gilberto Calderón-Montiel, Diego Muñoz-Medina.

The Rockwell Automation Simulation competition provides students a chance to experience the power of computer simulation while gaining practical problem-solving experience using Rockwell Software's Arena simulation software. In this year's problem, an architecture firm needed assistance in the planning of a check-in and security area for an international airport.

Five teams were selected to attend the annual conference and present their findings to a panel of judges. A unique twist to this competition is that, on the day of the presentations, additional "critical" information concerning the case study is given to the student teams to further challenge their design solutions. Judging is based on how well the team analyzed not only the original problem but also the problem extension, how valid and logical their assumptions were, and the quality of their presentation.

Garnering third-place in a 3-way tie were participating teams Lehigh University - Jot Consulting, LLC. team members Jim Beattie, Tyler Espenlaub, and Orest Pasichnyk; North Carolina State University – Wolfpack team members James Lavin, Matt Diering, and Kirstin Lanning; and Seoul National University of Technology - Dynamic Analyze team members Gur Joong Kim, Uchan Yang, and Ho Dong Jung.

Congratulations to these exceptional student teams!
