Sunday, May 31st was a busy day at the IIE Conference in Miami as the final 5 teams competed in the last phase of the student simulation competition. Adding to the excitement was the participation of representatives from the actual facility who were involved in generating the problem for this year’s contest based on real issues at their facility. Their participation added a whole new dimension to the event! Prior to the student presentations, the facility spokesman addressed the students and audience. The students quickly realized that instead of just pitching their recommendations to a random audience, they were going to present their solutions directly to the folks who work and make key decisions in the plant that they spent months modeling and analyzing. The students and their professors were very excited and a lively Q&A session followed the conclusion of the competition.
The contest winners were announced at the awards ceremony that evening. Taking first place was the team from Monterrey, Mexico; second place went to Kyonggi University, South Korea; and third-place finishers were the teams from Seoul National University, University of Washington, and Ohio State.
Congratulations to all!
